Peter,
Well, here's the thing. With XC you can group your results by keyword and the bid keyword, the idea is that you'll bid on as many long tail as possible instead of relying on the phrase and broad matches. That way you'll get better CPCs.
But I do see why and how a match type will be useful, it's a slightly higher level view.
Now regarding your comment about customizing the URLs for XC, you really don't have to do that although it sure helps to break down your reports into categories.
I am trying to think if there is a way that SPPC can do it automatically so you don't have to customize anything...I am almost sure there is, but would have to check it...
There are many reasons why I don't like the idea of tagging the id next to the keywords. First, not everyone uses adwords editor, nor does everyone like to be doing a good bit of copying and pasting.
You end up losing a lot of valuable information that XC provides, search keywords and domain names.
What if you wanted to add/modify the keywords you're bidding on, certainly not as clean as the way XC does it...
Also conceptually adding tracking urls next to each keywords is more error prone and not as clean of a solution, but this subjective I suppose...
Thanks

Ok, I just checked, and sure enough Jay did add the campaign and adgroup parameters, to the tokens list. So you don't need to customize anything, just have SPPC take care of it for you.

Amir,
So I can simply use the SPPC tokens for campaign and adgroup in the destination URLs and XC will interpret the data correctly? |

is this how'd you do it?
adgroupname={adgroup}&matchtype={matchtype}
will xc understand "adgroupname"?
or is all what we really need is i.e. www.domain.com/index.php?{campaign}&{matchtype}&{adgroup}&bid_keyword={keyword}
or is this how its done for sppc and xc?
www.domain.com/index.php?campaign={campaign}&matchtype={matchtype}&adgroup={adgroup}&bid_keyword={keyword}
thanks |

was a newbie, none of that
www.domain.com/index.php?campaign={campaign}&ad={adgroup}_{matchtype}&bid_keyword={keyword}
This is one of way of doing it.
XC only understands campaign=, ad=, and bid_keyword= so you add to those variables whatever information you want recorded...

ok.
so if we do campaign={campaign} then i assume xc wont show i.e. google as campaign, if we did campaign=googlecampaign.
so how can we still maintain wihin xc to show i.e. googlecampaign and the actual name of campaign used in google based on {campaign}?
and i'm assuming we cant use "&bid_keyword={keyword}_{matchtype}" instead of "ad={adgroup}_{matchtype}"
just seems weird to match type with ad token instead of bid keyword token. |

Ok, let me clarify something.
{campaign} {adgroup} and {matchtype} are all tokens that get replaced with their actual value.
So if in SPPC you say campaign={campaign}google&bid_keyworld={keyword}{matchtype}
The the result will be:
campaign=campaignnamegoogle&bid_keyword={keyword}broad
campaign=campaignnamegoogle&bid_keyword={keyword}phrase
campaign=campaignnamegoogle&bid_keyword={keyword}exact
...
....
YOu can create any combination your little/big heart desires.

Amir, I'm afraid that, like everyone keeps saying, there is a problem with XC: it does not properly tell you which match type made the sale. Please, let me explain . . .
Imagine these three keywords:
buy shoes
"buy shoes"
[buy shoes]
In my XC stats, the bid keyword for these three different match types is the same, buy shoes.
According to your explanation, I will be able to tell which match type made the sale by looking at the keyword next to the bid keyword. For example, if the keyword is buy shoes, then the exact match type made the sale; if the keyword is buy shoes for cheap, then the phrase match type made the sale; and if the keyword is shoe store, then the broad match type made the sale.
That's fine. However, what if there is no keyword next to the bid keyword? Am I supposed to guess which match type made the sale? Even worse, what if a bid keyword appears hundreds or even thousands of times? Am I supposed to scroll down through every single one, identify its match type and count the sales?
And those aren't the only problems.
When I click the Bid Keyword tab, buy shoes appears just once. How am I supposed to know the proportion of sales made by each of the match types when I look at my stats in this way?
I do know a way that these problems can be avoided: at the start of a campaign, I can give each match type a different destination URL. For example, I can append ?bid_keyword={keyword}_broad to the destination URL of all broad match types, and I can append ?bid_keyword={keyword}_phrase to the destination URL of all phrase match types. However, like I said, that will only work if it's done at the start of a campaign. My campaign is over six months old. I have already collected heaps of stats, and I can't tell, at a glance, which match types made the sales!
AAAAARRGGHHHHH!
Do you know a way that I can fix this problem?
Note that I am still using V3.1.
By the way, this is not a complaint of any kind. I can safely say that XC has been the best money that I have spent on an affiliate marketing product. |
